Blogging. Loosen up your Tie

Blogging–In General

Loosen tie

Blogging is an odd thing. Well, not that odd, but when you’re in the business world, I think you tend to think a little bit too much about what should be in the blog, how to write for a blog, should you uses images when posting blog entries, and it all tends to put a halt to what you should really be putting your effort into, i.e., actually blogging!

I know this because i’m guilty of it myself. I tend to want to be smarter than I am when posting on blogs. I want to do a lot of research, make sure i’m ‘in the know,’ when it comes to the latest trends, make sure I have jazzy pictures for my readers to ooh and ahh over, when really, while it does add value, the readers come to learn something or to be entertained by my point of view. But I forget that. I push aside the reality of why I would go to someone’s blog. It’s not for the news–because if I wanted the news I would go to CNN or Fox (please, no need for comments here), or Drudgereport.com (again, no need).

I read blogs because while i’m learning i’m being entertained. If i’m going to a copywriting blog, I want to learn how to improve my copywriting, but I also don’t mind an occasional joke or two about how the copywriter submits gibberish on page three in the form of a lore ipsum line or two, or rags on his editor, because he/she knows that his/her editor will never make it that far down the page. If I go to a blog about politics, I want the blogger to take a side, and bash the other side, because that’s going to entertain me, or anger me, and I want those ups and downs when I’m reading a blog. But what about business blogs, you say?

Business blogs can still be informal. You won’t get a slap on the wrist for not being stuffy on your business blog. The key is to know your audience, write entries that educate them-not only about your products and services, but also with the background of becoming a ‘thought leader’ in your industry, and be yourself. Obviously this is a generalization, because there will always be certain audiences that require a little more tightening of the belt when it comes to lax blog entries, but for the most part you should be able to have a little fun writing your blog. If you’re going to be devoting the time to write for a blog, time you probably don’t have much of to begin with, the writing should come easy. And that, my friends, requires loosening the tie some.
